IN BRIEF

Say Hey! Willie Mays, the man many consider to be the greatest all-around baseball player, donned this white San Francisco Giants flannel jersey during the 1968 season. Mays batted .289 with 23 home runs and an .860 OPS, registering 6.3 WAR in the campaign that was dominated so heavily by pitching the mound was lowered 10 inches to spark the offense in 1969. MEARS and authenticator Dave Grob have deemed the gamer to be of top quality, grading it an A9.5. Additionally, Mays has applied a black ink autograph to the front of the shirt which has been authenticated by Beckett. An exceptional offering of a first-rate piece of baseball history as memorabilia continues its rapid climb.

THE ATHLETE

With his ability to make the spectacular seem commonplace and his positive demeanor, it’s little wonder that Willie Mays was, is, and always will be one of baseball’s most beloved figures. Over his 22-year career, the Say Hey Kid racked up a pair of MVP awards, a World Series ring, a batting title, and a whopping 12 Gold Gloves. With a rare combination of speed and power, Mays led the league four times in home runs and four times in stolen bases. His 660 homers is the sixth-most in MLB history, and his 338 swipes ties him for 122nd on the all-time list. Mays entranced both coasts (and everywhere in between), beginning his career with a Giants franchise that moved from New York to San Francisco before his seventh season in the league, then wrapping it up back in NYC with the Mets. None other than Ted Williams said, “They made the All-Star Game for Willie Mays.”

THE OFFERING

A historic offering, this jersey was game-worn and signed by Willie Mays during the 1968 season with the San Francisco Giants.
The “museum-worthy Mays gamer” was previously sold at Goldin Auctions for $92,063 in 2018 and $86,400 in 2019. Since then, the value of a Mays 1952 Topps PSA 8 has risen between 8-10x.
“The jersey shows moderate game use with overall toning to the flannel along with some pine tar and turf staining. The piping around the neck and sleeve openings shows some fraying and there are loose threads throughout. The lettering has slightly faded from repeated laundering”
Graded an immaculate A9.5 by MEARS in their Letter of Authentication.
Authenticity of the jersey has been confirmed by MEARS’ Dave Grob (LOA #315416) and Dick Dobbins of San Francisco Giants Memorabilia (LOA included).
Signature has been authenticated by Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication Services (LOA #A89869).
A MEARS A9 Mays game-used jersey from 1965 reached $150,000 in a February 2020 Heritage auction and in May of 2021 an offer of $225,000 was declined by the purchaser.
A 1966 Mays jersey, photomatched and graded a top-tier MEARS A10, fetched $96,000 in 2017, with the purchaser declining an $171,000 offer in January of 2021.
A Mays gamer from his last game at the Polo Grounds in 1957 - MEARS A8 - realized $212,216.40 at a Leland’s sale in 2017.
