IN BRIEF

Arguably the holy grail of hockey, this the key rookie card of the “Great One”, Wayne Gretzky. Few athletes have dominated their sport quite like Gretzky dominated hockey, compiling over 60 NHL records during his astonishing career. According to PSA, “the 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie is one of the toughest and most valuable modern-era trading cards in the market.” Collectable shareholders rejected a $225,000 buy out offer for this asset in April 2021.
This asset trades every weekday between 3pm-4pm EST. Investors can place bids and asks in “Post Only” mode at all other times.

THE ATHLETE

Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed “The Great One”, is considered the greatest hockey player of all time. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records. He won 4 Stanley Cup Championships with the Edmonton Oilers. Some of the remarkable accomplishments from Gretzky’s career include: finishing with 894 goals and 1,963 assist (2,857 points), 15 NHL All-Star selections (8 First Team and 7 Second Team squads), nine Hart Trophies as the league’s best player, 10 Art Ross Trophies, two Conn Smythe Trophies and five Byng Trophies. Gretzky played for 4 teams (Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues) over the course of 20 seasons.

THE OFFERING

This card is graded a 9 by PSA, sports collectibles leading grading company. There are only 89 PSA 9 1979 Wayne Gretzky O-Pee-Chee cards - his key rookie card - known in circulation, out of the 5,711 PSA has graded. For context, there are only 2 graded Gem Mint 10.
The last three recorded auction sales of PSA 9’s were $271,830, $259,501, $242,000 and $198,030 via Goldin Auctions and Lelands in March 2021. Previous sales include $84,000 and $75,000. Collectable IPO’d the offering at $67,000.
'79 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee PSA 9’s have exhibited a 45.88% compound annual growth rate over the past 5 years.
The '79 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee PSA 10 became the first $1million hockey card, selling for $1,290,000 in December 2020 via Heritage Auctions.
The 1979 O-Pee-Chee set has to contend with a few major condition obstacles including chipping along the blue border, print defects and severe rough-cuts, making PSA Mint 9 or better examples very hard to come by. In addition, the centering on this card is often found in the 60/40 or worse range.
The card boasts beautiful centering with fantastic borders and sharp corners. Well printed with wonderful color and clarity.
This is the key rookie card of hockey’s greatest player. When people talk about the greatest athletes in sports, you often hear names like Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan, but one could make a great argument that none of them dominated their sport the way Wayne Gretzky dominated hockey.
