Care to guess who holds the world record for professional baseball career home runs? Nope, not Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, or Babe Ruth. It’s Yomiuri Giants Japanese slugger, Sadaharu Oh - with 868 career home runs while playing his entire 22-year career in Japan’s professional leagues. Deemed the “Japanese Babe Ruth”, this is a historic opportunity to own one of the legend’s weapons of choice. This game used bat from 1977-78 was authenticated by PSA/DNA with a perfect grade of GU 10. With the recent explosion of Japanese superstar Shohei Otani, many collectors are honing in on the history and influence of Japanese baseball to the MLB. This is a premier asset to own from the Babe Ruth of Japanese baseball.

Sadaharu Oh holds the world lifetime home run record, having hit 868 home runs during his professional career. He established many NPB batting records, including runs batted in (RBIs) (2,170), slugging percentage (.634), bases on balls (2,390), and on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) (1.080). Oh is an 11x Japan Series Champion, 9x Central League MVP, and 2x Japanese Triple Crown. In 1977, Oh became the first recipient of the People’s Honour Award. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.

Oh was undoubtedly the most talented player in Japanese baseball history, hitting .301/.446/.634 through a 22-year career, with 2,786 hits, 2,170 RBI, 868 home runs and nine Central League MVP Awards, as Yomiuri won 11 Japan Series titles in his tenure, including nine straight between 1965 and 1973.
Oh averaged 43 home runs per year between 1962 and 1974, toppling the 500 mark and becoming the first Japanese player ever to reach the 600 plateau. After befriending Hank Aaron, America’s home run king, the duo engaged in a home run hitting contest in 1974, which fueled Oh’s desire to beat the world records set by his Major League counterparts.
This 1977-78 game used and signed was authenticated and graded a GU 10 by PSA/DNA.
This bat is a 1 of 1 - the only bat used by Oh to grade a PSA/DNA GU 10.
Signed in both Japanese and English by Oh.
The bat is accompanied by a letter, signed by George Foster, describing how he obtained the bat from Oh during the All Star Tour of Japan in the late 1970s.
The Guardian wrote eloquently, “Yes, he played in Japan, not America. And yes, he faced pitchers of inferior quality and fields of smaller dimension, but Oh also overcame racial prejudice, niggling criticism and searing scrutiny to establish a hallowed record and become the most mystical sporting hero in Japanese history. And for that, he deserves unending respect and boundless admiration.”
Babe Ruth bats routinely go well into the 6-figures, even a few in the 7-figures, including a PSA/DNA GU 8 late career bat that just sold for $105,750 at the annual All-Star Auction.
The consignor is retaining $10,000 in the offering.
