Collectable is honored to present the first offering from the famed Sports Immortals collection - an original championship belt awarded to Muhammad Ali by the World Boxing Council (WBC) for his victory over George Foreman in the “Rumble in the Jungle.” Considered one of the most valuable artifacts in existence from one of the most iconic athletes of all time. Obtained directly from Cassius Clay Sr., Ali’s father, by Sports Immortals founder Joel Platt. This incredibly rare treasure comes with a hand written letter from Cassius Clay Sr., a letter from Muhammad Ali, and a letter from esteemed boxing historian, Craig Hamilton.

Muhammad Ali, nicknamed “the Greatest”, is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated figures of the 20th century and as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Ali was awarded the greatest athlete of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated, the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC, and the third greatest athlete of the 20th century by ESPN SportsCentury. He was involved in several historic boxing matches most notably his fights with Joe Frazier and his fight with George Foreman. A charismatic and electrifying figure, Ali became the first man to win the heavyweight title three times. Ali was picked to light the Olympic torch to start the 1996 games in Atlanta and, in 2005, President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.” As the New York Times eloquently stated, Ali “was the most thrilling if not the best heavyweight ever, carrying into the ring a physically lyrical, unorthodox boxing style that fused speed, agility and power more seamlessly than that of any fighter before him.”

From 1976 to 1978 the WBC gave out their Championship Green Belts. Research shows less than 20 champions received one of these green belts during this period. Two of them were presented to Muhammad Ali in honor of his victory over George Foreman in the famed “The Rumble in the Jungle” bout of 1974.
The Rumble in the Jungle has been called “arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century” and was watched by a record estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide, becoming the world’s most-watched live television broadcast at the time.
Muhammad Ali later presented this WBC belt to his father, Cassius Clay Sr. The belt is signed in two different places stating “Championship belt won by my son Muhammad Ali…Cassius Clay Sr.”
The belt was purchased directly from Ali’s father, Cassius Clay Sr. when Joel Platt, founder of Sports Immortals, Inc., visited his home in Louisville, Kentucky in 1989. Clay Sr. hand wrote a note stating that if his son, Muhammad, objected to the sale within six months the buyer would return the belt and be reimbursed. Years later, Platt had Ali sign a note saying it was an honor to have his Belt in the Sports Immortals Collection. The note has been authenticated directly by Craig Hamilton. Platt has also kept the canceled check from the purchase which will be included with the belt.
The belt comes with a detailed six-page Letter of Authenticity (LOA) from boxing memorabilia expert Craig Hamilton confirming its authenticity and lineage from WBC to Ali to Platt. Mr. Hamilton also authenticated the signature of Muhammad Ali on the 1994 note to Joel Platt and the signature of Cassius Clay Sr. on the belt and on the 1989 letter.
There are two authentic WBC belts awarded to Muhammad Ali in 1976 for his 1974 victory over George Foreman. The other belt comes from one of Ali’s cornermen, Bundini Brown. On Brown’s belt, most of the central plate’s enamel detailing of swirling national flags has chipped away during decades of storage. Nonetheless that belt has sold for $358,500 by Heritage and $120,000 by Lelands. This offering is priced at premium to the other belt due to its iron clad provenance.
Sports Immortals will be retaining $300,000 in equity in the offering.
