Arguably Mickey Mantle’s most beautiful card, and certainly one of his most important, this 1953 Topps PSA 8 is an iconic addition to vintage baseball card portfolios. The 1953 Topps is an immensely popular set due to its beautiful paintings drawn by many of the leading artists of the day of many of the games best players, most notably Mickey Mantle. A true work of art.

Mickey Mantle, nicknamed “The Mick”, was the linchpin of the New York Yankees epic dynasty during the 1950s and early 1960s. He won 7 World Series Championships, 3 Most Valuable Player awards and was selected to 20 All-Star games. His journey from humble origins to centerfielder for the New York Yankees is the stuff of the American Dream. Mantle was a classic five-tool player who possessed almost supernatural power that led to a bevy of tape measure home runs, including a 560-foot home run that remains the longest in baseball history. Mantle finished his career with 536 home runs, 1,676 runs scored, 1,509 RBI, 1,733 walks and a .298 batting average, and was selected as a first ballot Hall of Famer and member of Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team.

This card is graded NM-MT 8 by PSA, sports collectibles leading grading company. There are only 94 in existence, with only 16 copies graded higher.
The 1953 Mantle is one of the set’s few and most key short prints, meaning it was produced in fewer numbers than other cards and, thus, making it more rare and expensive.
The PWCC Top 100 index, an index that tracks the price movements of the top 100 most valuable trading cards sold at auction and which includes other comparable Mantle cards, has risen 264% since January 2008.
The most recent sale of a 1952 Mickey Mantle #311 PSA NM-MT 9 was $5,200,000 in a private sale brokered by PWCC, setting a new record for the most expensive card ever sold. A 1952 Mickey Mantle PSA Gem-Mint 10 is estimated to be worth ~25,000,000 by many seasoned collectors. The 1952 Mantle’s command a premium over the 1953; however, many believe the 1953 Mantle is the most visually appealing and beautiful Mantle card ever printed.
This card is tough to locate in high-grade. The red bottom border is subject to chipping and the card is very tough to find well-centered. Since the image provides a close-up view of Mantle, many copies have print defects that encroach on Mantle’s face - making it all the more condition sensitive.
The 1953 Topps baseball set is considered to be the set that launched Topps to three decades of dominance over its main competitor, Bowman. Topps contracted renowned New England artist Gerry Dvorak to create oil paintings of each player.
Collectable IPO’d a Mantle 1953 PSA 10 for $2,500,000 in September 2020. In July 2021, shareholders accepted a buyout offer of $3,100,000 for the asset.
