IN BRIEF

An incredible basket offering celebrating two of most iconic and decorated Negro League ballplayers, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige. The center piece is a one-of-one Josh Gibson 2003 SP Legendary Cuts card featuring his signature - one of only two Josh Gibson signatures ever incorporated in a baseball card. A single signed Josh Gibson baseball just sold for $198,000 in August 2021. The second asset, a Satchel Paige 2003 SP Legendary Cuts PSA 8, featuring an autograph from the legendary hurler. Both players left an indelible legacy and helped pioneer progress towards the breaking of the color barrier - achievements surely to cement their long-term collectibility.

THE ATHLETE

“Satchel” Paige is considered one of the greatest pitchers in the history of professional baseball, having played in Negro League baseball from 1926-1946 and Major League Baseball from 1948-1953. Paige was the first black pitcher to play in the American League and was the seventh black player to play in Major League Baseball. Paige also became the first player who had played in the Negro leagues to pitch in the World Series and the first electee of the Negro League Committee to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. Josh Gibson is widely considered to be one of the greatest power hitters and catchers in baseball history. Nicknamed the “Black Babe Ruth”, some fans at the time even went so far as to refer to Babe Ruth as the “white Josh Gibson”. Gibson was officially awarded the Major League record for single season batting average with .441, when Major League Baseball announced that it will recognize Negro league records.

THE OFFERING

A celebratory offering featuring two of the most iconic and decorated Negro League ballplayers, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige.
This basket contains two (2) cut signature autograph cards from the 2003 SP Legendary Cuts series.
2003 SP Legendary Cuts is regarded as the leading autograph set ever released by any card company.
The first card features the signature of Josh Gibson and this “1 of 1” issue is regarded as the “crown jewel” of the 2003 SP Legendary Cuts set. Because he died at age 35 and before the advent of the memorabilia age, his signature is extremely rare. This card represents one of only two Josh Gibson signatures ever incorporated in a baseball card. Upon release, one trade journal referred to this card as the most significant new issue in memory.
A single signed Josh Gibson just sold for $198,000 in August 2021 at Robert Edwards Auction.
With the integration of Negro League statistics into those of the major Leagues, many collectors believe Josh Gibson could become recognized as the greatest right-handed hitter of all time.
The Josh Gibson’s signature card is authenticated by Upper Deck. The card is raw, or ungraded.
The Gibson sold in 2003 from a private sale for $12,500. Prices for Josh Gibson collectibles have risen 6x-8x since 2003, by Collectable’s estimation - providing strong valuation support at IPO.
The second card features a signature of Satchel Paige in blue ink. Graded PSA NM-MT 8.
The card is numbered to 11, and represents #6.
Both cards contain a quote attributed to the player depicted as well as their team logo, position and jersey number.
