IN BRIEF

“A rare opportunity to invest in a significant Wagner collectible in its highest graded, original state”, Collectable is honored to present this Honus Wagner 1910 Tip-Top Bread PSA 5. One of only three PSA 5’s in existence, with none graded higher. Featuring artwork based on the same original Carl Horner photograph that inspired the mythic T206 issue, this set was crafted to celebrate the 1909 World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, who were the previous year’s World Championship team. Honus Wagner’s legacy within the sports collectibles industry is firmly entrenched, with his T206 recently selling for a record $6.6 million.

THE ATHLETE

Though he is most well known to the broader world because of his famous cardboard Johannes Peter “Honus” Wagner can also lay claim to the title of “Greatest Shortstop of All-Time” - or possibly the greatest player, if you asked Ty Cobb. “The Flying Dutchman” racked up 3,420 hits with a .328 career average in his 21 seasons with the Louisville Colonels and the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 8 batting titles, and one World Series (1909). In 1936 Wagner was the second highest vote-getter for the inaugural Hall of Fame class of five, tied with Babe Ruth.

THE OFFERING

A historic offering featuring Baseball Hall of Famer and sports collectibles legend, Honus Wagner.
Graded a PSA 5.
There are only 3 PSA 5’s in existence, with none graded higher.
The last three comps in 2021 are: $85,200, $84,998, and $75,000.
One of 32 examples encapsulated by PSA. From Heritage Auctions: “This set was crafted to celebrate the 1909 World Series Champs for the Pittsburgh market, packaged with loafs of bread for Steeltown sandwich eaters. Fewer than 500 specimens from the entire issue appear in the PSA population, and this is the finest example of its most desirable entry.”
50 Tip-Top Bread labels were required to mail in for the entire 25-card set.
The card’s back advises readers to, “Save 50 labels from TIP-TOP BREAD and secure this entire series (25 cards) free,” a suggestion clearly ignored by the vast majority of the time’s consumers.
Altan Insights recently featured the Wagner 1910 Tip Top Bread PSA 5 on their “Fractional Wish List”.
