According to PSA, these cards have “been picking up market momentum in recent years as more collectors are appreciating how underrated Robinson was as a player.”

THE ATHLETE

Frank Robinson was an American professional baseball outfielder who played for five teams, from 1956 to 1976. He is the only player to be named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of both the National League (NL) and the American League (AL). In addition, he won the Triple Crown in 1966 and is a 2x World Series Champion. A 14-time All-Star, Robinson batted .300 nine times, hit 30 home runs 11 times, and led his league in slugging four times and in runs scored three times. His 586 career home runs ranked fourth in major league history at the time of his retirement, and he ranked sixth in total bases (5,373) and extra-base hits (1,186), eighth in games played (2,808), and ninth in runs scored (1,829). Robinson’s 2,943 career hits are the most since 1934 by any player who fell short of the 3,000-hit mark. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1982.

THE OFFERING

This offering contains a basket of two (2) Frank Robinson 1957 rookie cards.
Both cards are graded 9 by PSA, sports collectibles leading grading company. These are 2 of 26 to have received that grade out of 4,584 graded examples. There are no cards graded higher.
The 1957 Topps is the most sought after rookie card for Frank Robinson, with the rest of the set containing such notable rookies as Don Drysdale, Bill Mazeroski, Brooks Robinson and Jim Bunning. These cards (#35) remains one of the most valuable cards in the set, along with some of the other rookie cards and singles like those of Ted Williams, Mantle, and Sandy Koufax.
The '57 Topps Robinson, according to PSA, has “been picking up market momentum in recent years as more collectors are appreciating how underrated Robinson was as a player. In addition to being the official rookie card of this incredible all-around talent, it is also a reminder of the great rookie campaign Robinson had. It still ranks up there as one of the best in history and he was appropriately named NL Rookie of the Year for his performance.”
This card has been particularly condition sensitive. According to PSA, “the background on the card can be a haven for print defects that are often referred to as “snow,” which is one of the condition obstacles for the card.”
The PWCC Top 100 index, an index that tracks the price movements of the top 100 most valuable trading cards sold at auction and which includes other comparable cards, has risen 264% since January 2008.
In 1975, Robinson was named the Cleveland Indians player-manager --- becoming the first African American to manage a major league club.
The consignor is retaining $17,375 in equity in the offering.
